What to Wear
Think COORDINATE instead of match. First pick a neutral color for a base - try black, brown, gray, or navy. Then add 2-3 colors that go well with your neutral. Everyone in a matching shirt is outdated (very 90's) and makes the arrangement less interesting.
Match STYLES - meaning if one person has on a dress with nylons and high heels, don't put the teenage son in rolled up jeans with bare feet - both acceptable outfits, just not at the same time.
Go with LONG SLEEVES over tanks. PANTS instead of shorts. You want faces to be the focus. Covered skin helps draw attention to the face. Those hairy legs on your husband will stand out more than you think.
LAYERS are a great way to add dimension and a splash of color (it also helps when searching your closet to coordinate everyone without buying all new items). To coordinate with someone's red and gray flowered dress put a red shirt under a sweater for one kid and a gray shirt under a polo shirt for another kid, tricks like that work great.
Think PATTERNS and STRIPES and SOLIDS - avoid logos, cartoon characters, or writing on clothing.
Try one of two people in patterns while the rest of you wear the neutral color you chose with a splash of color on a bottom layer, scarf, a hat, headband, boots, or a jacket.
AVOID white for outdoor photos, especially on sunny days. The reflection is often too bright and out-shines those smiling faces :)
Speaking of smiling faces, be aware of your MAKEUP. If you are like me and don't normally wear much makeup, add a little extra especially when it comes to lipstick and blush. On the other hand, don't over-do it.
Watch out for bright socks and shoes, unless they match with your color scheme. When in doubt go BAREFOOT. I am a fan of barefoot photos.
Think DETAILS.... scarfs, hair accessories, hats, layers, earrings, etc. Buy a few new items if you need. A necklace here and a colorful undershirt there can really unify the photo. On the other hand, faded colors and wore out knees will stand out and detract from the overall look of the photo.
THOUGHTFUL outfits will help everyone in the photo to look crisp and well put together. Afterall that is how your family looks everyday, right....ok, I'm being sarcastic, but it IS how you want your photo to look hanging on your wall for years to come.
P.S. Feel free to run ideas past me for input. Coordinating outfits is one of my favorite parts to taking portraits, truly it is.
